Heather Heffken: MY name is Heather, but my friends and family call me Hedda(or heddow…like ‘Heather’with a homestarruner voice.)I live with my fantabulous husband in Alabama. I love art. All Kinds.I recycle for my craft when I can,and I run my business in as ‘green’ a way as possible.Eventually I will begin selling only eco-friendly items.
I’ve been crafting and creating my entire life.I started sewing by hand when I was about…oh,I dunno, five years old?My mom would know for sure.I started seriously sewing and learning to use machines around age 10, so I have 10 years of serious sewing under my belt. You will be pleased with the quality of my work, I promise:)
MaxEquations is a labor of love created by myself, Eve in partnership with my husband, Gary. He provides the business knowledge while I design our clothing and communicate with our customers. I have a varied background in the arts, as does Gary, but no direct experience in designing clothing until now. Strangely enough, I spent thousands of hours of my childhood drawing fashion designs. Who knew?
After the collection is designed, I work hand in hand with Linda Synder, our in house seamstress and pattern maker, who helps make my ideas come to life.
The clothing is then hand painted by our artist, Brian Metz. Our painted images are based on a seasonal theme determined by myself and designed along with Brian who paints each piece to order.
Fantastic prom dress in purple — coincidentally my favorite color. It’s called “I Just Want to DANCE” and believe me you will in this frock! By Platipuses.
I am one of those plus sized people who has no Bust. I also have a belly that falls from just under my non existent bust due to pregnancy and genetics… I find that sometimes this causes clothing to make me look pregnant, I do get asked every now and again when I’m out and about with my 2yo “When is the next one Due.” Which is a little embarrassing for the person asking the question, I’m sure.
I therefore ‘LOVE’ the look of corsets, either as underwear or overwear. As a plus sized woman though, I’ve tried many different sorts, and it really depends on your body type. However, one thing that is a must is Steel Boning. The plastic boning just does not work for the larger woman, I find that whenever I wear one with plastic boning, it only takes one slightly off kilter movement and the boning now has a kink! Totally uncomfortable and annoying. (Steel boned corsets, obviously are not for your everyday round the house kinda wear, they are constricting, and they do take a little getting used to.. but such a nice body line is achieved!)
Vio Gemini Designs on Etsy has some gorgeous Corsets and Pants.
Overbust Corsets generally suit women with a decent sized Bust moreso than their Smaller Busted counterparts.
UnderBust Corsets can really emphasise your Bust. I love this style of Corset. This one is also a long line Corset, which is great for Plus Size women as it smooths from the waist down over the hips aswell, they give a lovely line over formfitting skirts/dresses.
They also do these gorgeous Corseted Fishtail Skirts, that really set the corsets Off!
Please welcome Nyssa Rae to Try Handmade! She’s going to be covering Plus Size Fashion for us and I couldn’t be more excited.
Are you looking for something fashionable as well as available in larger sizes? Let her know in the comments or on Twitter and she’ll see what she can find for you.
Having been plus-sized most of my life, I’ve gone through all the graduations of style, from wearing whatever I wanted regardless of my size, through to wearing the frumpiest clothing I could possibly get my hands on, with the totally unfounded belief that it ‘camouflaged’ my size, through to purchasing clothing that flattered my frame. Now as a Mum to a 2year old, Comfort plays a massive part in clothing choices as well. But, on those rare occasions that I have ME time, I want to look Good!
I make childrens clothes for a living, and yet, I’m disinclined to make clothing for myself, its one of those things, lots of material for plus size clothing, and it just might not look as good on me as it does on the inevitably ‘average sized’ models on the front of the Plus size Pattern packet.
I am going to endeavour to change those perceptions, with your help!.. I am going to showcase Handmade Plus Size Clothing for purchase, trying as hard as possible to find images of said clothing on actual Plus Sized Models! and I’m going to jump in and try some of those patterns that run in the Plus Sizes.
First Seller I’m going to Share is a Seller on Etsy, her Shop is called Eon, Unique Designs by Selena. I looked long and hard to feature only 2 items, but she has a lot to go look at!
First Up the “Hell in a Handbasket” Hoody, hence the title of the Post. A gorgeous yet practical Hoody, totally comfy looking, with this feature weaving on the back. This is now top of my wishlist!
And my second pick of the store is this “Rising Sun” Dress, I love how the image shows the dress on a variety of sizes, they stock some premade items, as well as offer Custom made, which I think is a relatively good way to go when you are talking stretch Fabric.
Definitely go and check out her other items, Plus Size or not, and if you have something you want me to check out pattern or clothing wise, please feel free to contact me!
