Geek Necklace by Piano Bench Designs
It used to be that being called a nerd or a geek was a pretty bad thing. I remember some of those days quite well. Except for the kids when I was in grade one were much more eloquent! They called me the “Walking Encyclopedia”. Cue 2010 and being geeky is where it’s at. So it’s no surprise to me that these last couple of years there has been a surge in items you can buy for us “geeks” – often referred to as “geekery”.

How did this change in our way of thinking come about you ask? Well I feel pretty positive that we have the internets to thank for it! I remember the early days of the internet and AOL – when everyone knew we were on to something big, but they didn’t know just how big, or really how we’d end up using the web. And as you might remember at that time there were countless stories of crazy investments in some pretty off-beat companies and folks in the Silicon Valley were living large. Search engines were famous for bringing you just the results you wouldn’t want to find on a work computer (if you wanted to keep your job that is) and people were just discovering instant messaging and forums.

Then something changed. Well a lot of somethings. The internet became super useful and we were all left wondering what we’d do without it. Now we ask – how could I survive a work day without a stream of random chatter from my friend’s facebook feeds, randomly surfing hilarious videos on Youtube or browsing for Christmas gifts on fun sites like Cargoh (where I sourced all these finds today)? These days if you learn someone is a PHP genius or a Cold Fusion developer – it’s more likely that you’re in awe of them instead of thinking that they’re inferior in some way. Because these brilliant minds are helping us while away hours of our time in the most entertaining of ways, and allowing us to connect with people online, in ways we never would have thought possible just a few short years ago.

And if anyone was to buy me one of these gifts (particularly that coffee mug) I would wear it or display it like the badge of honor that it is. And if you have a family member or a friend who’s always calling themselves a geek – I think they’d love to have one of these items too.
