There are very few things that I dislike more than shopping for swimwear. It seems like all the cards are stacked against us as we walk into badly lit dressing rooms with funhouse mirrors that seem designed to accentuate only the negative. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a better way? A way that didn’t involve dressing rooms in department stores? You’ll be glad to know that there is a better way! Welcome to the wonderful world of handmade swimwear. Not only are there wonderful handmade options, but many designers use your measurements in order to create a swimsuit for you, so that the swimwear is made to fit your body rather than your body being forced to conform to the swimsuit.
Up first is this fabulous tankini from Sister Floyd. I am a big fan of the tankini because they combine the sassy look of a two-piece with a style that gives a little more coverage for those of us who might not be wanting to bare our bellies. This one has the added benefit of being basic black, with a splash of color, ensuring that it will be a timeless addition to your swimwear wardrobe.
In my swimwear search, I focused a lot on retro inspired styles for a couple of reasons. For one, they are almost universally flattering. Also, the retro look is one that seems to be particularly well done by the handmade community, much better than the mass produced retro suits that get the shape and cut wrong so frequently. One great example of retro done right is this powder blue number from Bettie “B” Dangerous Swimwear. This suit makes me think of that famous Betty Grable pinup pose, and who wouldn’t like to look like that for a day?
What if you’re the kind of girl who likes high impact color in your swimwear? You should mosey on over to The Red Dolly and check out this cherry red one piece. Adorable and a color that is sure to get you the right kind of attention on the beach or by the pool.
This next look is an iconic one inspired by that most famous of fashion dolls, Barbie. Made by LA Drama Queen, this look is as classic as Barbie herself.
This might not be yellow, but it certainly is an adorable polka dot bikini. Also made by LA Drama Queen, this bikini is perfect for anyone who wants to feel a little flirty and girlie when they hit the beach.
Are you set to look fabulous this summer? I think so! Join me next week when we talk about handmade goodies for your kitchen!
These suits are fabulous! Why would anyone even want mass produced?

These are wonderful–thank you for sharing! I also love the work of Miss Brache

All designs outlast the seasons. I find mass-produced bathing suits ill-fitting, so I always veer towards the vintage ones.
