When I was young, my family would pack up our station wagon every summer and head north from our Portland home, crossing the border to arrive in Vancouver, Canada. By the time we had reached a certain age my brothers and I knew all the fun that awaited us, and we couldn’t help but ask – “Are we there yet?” time and time again. Because there is nothing like reuniting with your cousins to enjoy nicky nicky ninedoor, endless supplies of green (Kermit the Frog) Koolaid, and family reunions complete with Pinatas and water balloon fights that even the parents would participate in. I can tell you now that 7 is the perfect number of cousins for such a gathering – especially if you’re all close in age, relatively mischievous and very fun loving. And if you’re wondering what “nicky nicky ninedoor” is – it’s a game where you knock on your neighbors doors then run away! Sounds silly to me now, but I can still remember the surge of adrenaline that would hit my small body as we knocked and ran away as fast as our little legs would carry us. We never got caught either.
I found this fun pinata on Etsy that we would have loved to take turns hitting! I can still envision all of us kids diving towards the pile of candy once the sweet paper mache donkey had released the treats from his belly!
The amount of popsicles we ate on those warm summer days, meant there were enough sticks left to create bridges and birdfeeders! How great is the poster below?
And one of my fondest memories? Sitting with my cousins on a warm summer night in their tv room, watching movies and eating popcorn from little wooden bowls, like these ones, pictured below. I love how the mind remembers the sweetest details from days gone by.
I hope you’re having a wonderful summer, making memories that you’ll look back on with happiness in the years to come!
