Talk to me – who’s seen Whip It?
It’s out on DVD now and I highly recommend it. I really didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Of course it inspired me to find a Roller Derby league to join. Though I gotta say while I’m into the racing around the rink – I am NOT into the bodychecking. So I’ll have to see if I can find a league that’s non-contact.
More than that it reminded me of being a teenager… I could relate to Ellen Page’s character in the movie big time. The junior high I went to – very preppy! And this was right around Kurt Cobain’s death and the apex of grunge culture. I was one of the very few students in my junior high who was big into everything alternative (I’ve lightened up a bit – you wouldn’t know about my “alternative past” looking at me now)!
Even more importantly the movie reminded me of two things – how many adventures I had when I was that age, as silly as they were – my friends and I were constantly pulling pranks and getting into trouble. The real message of the movie for me though? How great it is to get involved in something new – to take that risk and put yourself out there. To put your heart and soul into an endeavor and risk failure. But to be able to look back and see that what was more important was the journey. The friends you make, the new things you try, the experiences you would have otherwise never had.
