MissMalaprop.com is where modern handmade meets sustainable design. On my website, I spotlight the best in independent designers & artists, eco-friendly and sustainable products, New Orleans & Gulf Coast based businesses and issues, and people & organizations who are working to make the world a better place.
My own creations reflect those same principals. I began selling my creations under the name “dismantled designs” in 2004, after arriving home from a study abroad program in London where I saw the amazing artists at Portobello Market and where I was inspired to begin selling my own reconstructed clothing & accessories.
My designs are all one-of-a-kind, handmade and original. Most are made from used or vintage clothing, or remnant fabrics and trims. Each piece is meant to have a slightly unfinished, rough-hewn, well-loved look about it. I hope you enjoy!
Winter Lights Clothing: I specialize in original one of a kind clothes for chicks who aren’t afraid to show off their curves.
I believe that every garment in existence would look 36,000,000 times prettier with corset lacing and ruffles. ^__^
I’ve been sewing for going on 10 years, and the past few have been devoted to clothing. I am self-taught and don’t care much for patterns, so I only have made a few basics that I use. Sewing should be fun and intuitive in my opinion, therefore I have a fondness for ‘winging it’ and ‘seeing what happens’.
There is something about a bluebell wood with dappled sunlight streaming through the leaves that makes me believe in nature spirits. They’re there, I know they are. I just wish I could see them. I imagine them often though, wearing clothes made from their surroundings; woven grasses, leaf skirts, flower petal dresses and crowns made from dew drops. They are in fact, just the sort of clothes I’d like to wear myself. Fortunately, talented people are out there making them in actual human adult sizes!
The above outfit by Spiralina from her shop Fractal Wings is made from raw silk with beautiful embellishments and I just love the way the shapes emulate summer leaves. I’m a big fan of her work and actively encourage you all to take a look at her shop. In fact I will show another one of her items because I love them so much. Her philosophy is to offer unique and beautiful clothing that brings out the goddess in us and it is clear that nature inspires her.
Another great item of human-sized clothing is this fantastically cool skirt with a sort-of leaf tail. Yes, I did indeed say a leaf tail. Unusual yes, but I love it! By Nature Reworked.
Nuno felting is like a mysterious magical technique that I will never understand no matter how many you tube tutorials I may watch. This butterfly top by FeuerundWasser utilises this wonder brilliantly. The colours are beautiful too, especially the way the greens and yellows blend into each other.
Please welcome Nyssa Rae to Try Handmade! She’s going to be covering Plus Size Fashion for us and I couldn’t be more excited.
Are you looking for something fashionable as well as available in larger sizes? Let her know in the comments or on Twitter and she’ll see what she can find for you.
Having been plus-sized most of my life, I’ve gone through all the graduations of style, from wearing whatever I wanted regardless of my size, through to wearing the frumpiest clothing I could possibly get my hands on, with the totally unfounded belief that it ‘camouflaged’ my size, through to purchasing clothing that flattered my frame. Now as a Mum to a 2year old, Comfort plays a massive part in clothing choices as well. But, on those rare occasions that I have ME time, I want to look Good!
I make childrens clothes for a living, and yet, I’m disinclined to make clothing for myself, its one of those things, lots of material for plus size clothing, and it just might not look as good on me as it does on the inevitably ‘average sized’ models on the front of the Plus size Pattern packet.
I am going to endeavour to change those perceptions, with your help!.. I am going to showcase Handmade Plus Size Clothing for purchase, trying as hard as possible to find images of said clothing on actual Plus Sized Models! and I’m going to jump in and try some of those patterns that run in the Plus Sizes.
First Seller I’m going to Share is a Seller on Etsy, her Shop is called Eon, Unique Designs by Selena. I looked long and hard to feature only 2 items, but she has a lot to go look at!
First Up the “Hell in a Handbasket” Hoody, hence the title of the Post. A gorgeous yet practical Hoody, totally comfy looking, with this feature weaving on the back. This is now top of my wishlist!
And my second pick of the store is this “Rising Sun” Dress, I love how the image shows the dress on a variety of sizes, they stock some premade items, as well as offer Custom made, which I think is a relatively good way to go when you are talking stretch Fabric.
Definitely go and check out her other items, Plus Size or not, and if you have something you want me to check out pattern or clothing wise, please feel free to contact me!
It seems logical to me to begin this handmade beauty series at the beginning of the beauty regimen: cleansing. I don’t know anyone who applies make-up, or even clothing, prior to cleaning their skin. So I would like to explore with you the properties of handmade soap.
Handmade soap is different from commercial soap in two ways.
